x-height checker for food labels

GB food law sets a minimum x-height for mandatory text: 1.2 mm, or 0.9 mm where the largest surface of the pack is under 80 cm². Enter your font and pack size to see whether your text passes and the smallest point size you can use.

x-height ratios are typical values for each typeface. Different cuts vary slightly, so leave a margin, and check the printed proof.

How it's worked out

x-height (mm) = font size (pt) × 0.3528 × the font's x-height ratio. The minimum applies to mandatory particulars (1169/2011 Art 13 and Annex IV). The 80 cm² threshold is the largest surface of the packaging, which for a tub or bottle can be bigger than the label.

When you check a PDF with ProofMyLabel, we measure the real x-height of your smallest text directly from the artwork, so you don't need to know the font.
