Check your supplement sachet artwork before print

Sachets are where small-pack rules matter most. What has to be on the sachet depends on whether it is sold on its own or only inside an outer carton.

Sold on its own, or inside a carton?

Sold on its own: the sachet is the unit of sale, so it needs the full set of particulars and supplement statements, subject to the small-pack rules below.

Sold only inside a carton: the carton is the unit of sale and must carry the full labelling, including the total net quantity and the number of sachets (1169/2011 Annex IX). The individual sachets are not units of sale, although most brands still show the product name, dose and batch on each one.

Choose “sachet sold on its own” or “sachet inside an outer carton” when you check, and we apply the right rules.

Small-pack rules

  • Text size: where the largest surface is under 80 cm², the minimum x-height is 0.9 mm rather than 1.2 mm (Annex IV).
  • Under 10 cm²: general food law allows only the name, allergens, net quantity and date on the pack itself (Art 16(2)), and the lot mark can be omitted (Lot Marking Regulations). The Food Supplements Regulations have no equivalent exemption, so treat the supplement statements as still required.
  • Under 5 g: the net quantity can be omitted (Annex IX), but many brands show it anyway.

What we check on a sachet

  • “Food supplement” and the names of the nutrients or substances that characterise the product
  • The recommended daily dose, a warning not to exceed it, that supplements should not replace a varied diet, and to keep out of reach of young children
  • The amount of each vitamin, mineral or other substance per daily dose, with %NRV for vitamins and minerals
  • Health and nutrition claims against the GB register
  • Allergens, durability date and batch space, and the UK business address

Text size

Mandatory text needs a minimum x-height (the height of a lowercase “x”) of 1.2 mm, or 0.9 mm where the largest surface of the pack is under 80 cm² (1169/2011 Art 13 and Annex IV). Add your artwork size when you check a PDF and we measure your smallest text rather than estimate it.
